Chennai, Apr 10: The Madras High Court on Friday rejected a petition seeking a ban on the screening of the film Dhurandhar: The Revenge in Tamil Nadu during the ongoing election period.
The plea had contended that the release and exhibition of the film could potentially influence voters and disrupt the electoral environment. It urged the court to impose a temporary ban until the conclusion of the polls.
However, the court declined to grant any such relief, observing that there was no sufficient ground to interfere with the film’s release. It noted that mere apprehensions about possible influence on voters cannot be a basis for restricting a film’s screening, especially in the absence of concrete evidence.

The bench emphasised that appropriate authorities are already in place to address violations related to the Model Code of Conduct and election laws. It also underscored the importance of upholding freedom of expression and cautioned against imposing unnecessary restrictions without valid justification.
With the dismissal of the petition, the film will continue to be screened across Tamil Nadu without any legal hurdles during the election period.
