Tehran, Apr 12: Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf stated that recent negotiations between Iran and the United States failed to build trust, despite what he described as Tehran’s willingness to engage constructively.

In a series of remarks shared on social media, Ghalibaf said the Iranian delegation entered the discussions with “good faith” and presented forward-looking proposals. However, he noted that the US side ultimately did not succeed in convincing Iran of its intentions. He stressed that while Washington now understands Iran’s principles and position, the responsibility lies with the US to demonstrate whether it can earn Tehran’s trust.

The comments followed high-level talks held in Islamabad, which concluded without any agreement after more than 20 hours of discussions. Ghalibaf, who led the Iranian delegation, also acknowledged public support within Iran, thanking citizens for rallying behind the leadership and praising his team for enduring lengthy and intense negotiations.

The stalled dialogue represents another setback in efforts to ease long-standing tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme—an issue that has repeatedly derailed diplomatic progress due to disagreements over sanctions relief, verification mechanisms, and uranium enrichment limits.

From the US side, J. D. Vance confirmed that despite extensive discussions, no deal was reached. He described the lack of agreement as more damaging for Iran than for the United States, emphasizing that Washington had clearly communicated its conditions.

Vance reiterated that the US remains focused on ensuring Iran does not develop nuclear weapons or the capability to rapidly produce them. He added that the US is seeking firm, long-term commitments rather than temporary assurances—something he said Iran has yet to provide.

With both sides holding firm on key issues, the outcome underscores the continuing challenges in resolving one of the most complex geopolitical disputes between Washington and Tehran.
