Mob violence in Manipur after drug bust leaves 18 injured, vehicles torched

Imphal,, Apr 14: Tensions escalated in Bishnupur district after a drug-related operation triggered mob violence, leaving at least 18 civilians, including five women, injured on Tuesday.

The unrest followed a joint operation at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, where personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force and local police arrested a suspected drug peddler. Authorities recovered around 6.74 kg of suspected brown sugar concealed in containers inside his luggage.

During initial questioning, the accused reportedly disclosed information about hidden arms and ammunition in Bishnupur district. Acting on this input, security forces moved towards the indicated location.

However, their convoy was stopped near Thinungei after rumours spread among locals about the identity and intent of the security personnel. A large crowd gathered and blocked the route, with some members turning violent. Two security vehicles were vandalised and set on fire, and there were attempts to detain personnel on the spot.

Reinforcements were rushed in, and security forces used tear gas and minimal force to disperse the crowd and restore order. In the clashes, 18 civilians sustained injuries and received medical attention.

Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the violence, while efforts are ongoing to identify others involved in arson, obstruction, and unlawful assembly.

Authorities later conducted a flag march in the affected area to maintain peace. Officials have urged residents to avoid spreading misinformation and to cooperate with law enforcement, warning that strict action will be taken against those involved in violence or rumour-mongering.
