Mangaluru: Transgender cafe owner denies kidnapping allegations, seeks fair probe

Mangaluru, Apr 15: Transgender entrepreneur and proprietor of ‘Ani Cafe’ in Mangaluru, Ani Mangaluru, on Wednesday addressed a press conference strongly denying allegations of kidnapping, harassment and extortion levelled against her by an individual identified as Anil Kumar from Thyagaraja Colony in Nanjangud.

Responding to a viral video circulating the accusations, Ani became emotional while refuting the claims, stating that the allegations were “completely false and baseless.” She said the controversy had caused severe damage to her reputation and made it difficult for her to step out in public.

Recounting her personal journey, Ani said she received little support when she began her café venture. “When I was driving an auto, I offered free rides to fellow transgender persons and pregnant women. No one appreciated those efforts. Today, instead of recognising my achievements, I am being targeted with false accusations,” she said.

Highlighting progress within the transgender community, Ani noted that several members have gone on to become doctors and lawyers, while she chose entrepreneurship. “Just as I cannot ask others to start a café like me, it is unfair to question why I did not become a doctor or a police officer,” she added.

Ani further defended her social media presence, stating that her videos and reels are intended to inspire and uplift the transgender community. “Is it wrong to create content that encourages our community to come into the mainstream and live with dignity?” she questioned.

She also accused Anil Kumar of repeatedly spreading misinformation about her on social media and alleged a possible larger conspiracy behind the accusations. Ani urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and establish the truth.

“The false allegations have not only affected me but have also hurt the dignity of the entire community,” she said, calling for justice and accountability.
