Kahramanmaras, Apr 15: A wave of violence has struck Turkey’s education system for the second time in 48 hours. On Wednesday, a shooting at Ayser Calik Middle School in Kahramanmaras resulted in the deaths of three students and one teacher, leaving the local community in mourning and a nation demanding answers.
According to Kahramanmaras governor Mukerrem Unluer, the perpetrator was an eighth-grade student who arrived at the school heavily armed. The young attacker reportedly carried a backpack containing five firearms and seven magazines. He entered two active classrooms and opened fire indiscriminately on his peers and faculty. Of the 20 injured, four remain in critical condition and are currently undergoing emergency surgery. The shooter died at the scene from a gunshot wound during the ensuing chaos; authorities are still determining if it was a deliberate suicide.

"The student involved is one of our own," governor Unluer told reporters. "His father, a former police officer, has been detained as we suspect the weapons were taken from him."
Turkey's Justice Minister, Akin Gurlek, confirmed that a high-priority investigation is underway. The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has deployed a specialized team consisting of three Deputy Chief Prosecutors and four Public Prosecutors to the site. In an effort to protect the integrity of the probe and the privacy of the victims' families, a broadcasting ban has been implemented. Officials have urged media outlets to exercise extreme sensitivity while the investigation into the motive and security breaches continues.
This tragedy follows a strikingly similar event just one day prior. On Tuesday, in the Siverek district, a former student opened fire at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, injuring 16 people before taking his own life. Sanliurfa Governor Hasan Sildak, who visited victims at Siverek State Hospital, noted that the investigation into the Tuesday attack is also being "probed from multiple angles" to determine how the suspect gained access to the premises.
