New York, Apr 17: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has responded to criticism from US President Donald Trump over a proposed tax targeting wealthy property owners, saying both leaders ultimately want the city to succeed despite policy differences.
The exchange follows Trump’s sharp criticism of Mamdani’s new tax plan, which seeks to impose a surcharge on high-value properties owned by individuals whose primary residence is outside New York City. The proposed “pied-à-terre” tax would apply to homes valued above $5 million, including condominiums and co-ops.
Reacting to Trump’s remarks, Mamdani said the two share a common goal of ensuring the city’s success. “The president and I both want the city to succeed. This is how you do it,” he said, defending his plan to tax the rich.

Trump had earlier taken to social media to criticise the proposal, warning that such policies could drive people away and harm the city’s economy. He also reiterated concerns about federal funding, which he has previously threatened to withhold over policy disagreements.
The mayor, however, maintained that the measure targets ultra-wealthy individuals who use New York real estate as an investment rather than a residence. According to city officials, the tax is expected to generate around $500 million annually.
The latest disagreement adds to a series of policy clashes between Mamdani and Trump, even as both leaders have occasionally found common ground in past engagements.
