Virginia, Apr 18: Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, once considered a rising figure in the Democratic Party, allegedly shot and killed his wife Cerina Fairfax before taking his own life at their residence in Annandale, Virginia, police said.
Authorities stated that the couple’s two teenage children were present in the house during the incident, with their son reportedly making the 911 emergency call. Police reached the home shortly after midnight on Thursday and found both Justin Fairfax and Cerina Fairfax dead inside.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said the incident appeared to have stemmed from an ongoing domestic dispute linked to a “complicated divorce” proceeding. He noted that Cerina Fairfax had recently been granted primary custody of the children following court orders issued earlier this month.

According to officials, the couple had been living separately within the same home amid divorce proceedings initiated in July 2025. Court records also indicate ongoing legal disputes, including custody arrangements and financial matters.
Police said evidence, including internal home surveillance cameras installed during divorce proceedings, is being reviewed as part of the investigation. Authorities further stated that the same firearm was believed to have been used in both shootings.
Dispatch audio revealed that the couple’s son informed emergency services that his father may have attacked his mother, who was found critically injured before officers discovered both individuals deceased.
Officials described the incident as deeply tragic, especially given the presence of the children inside the home at the time. The children are now under the care of relatives with support services being provided.
Investigators also referred to ongoing legal proceedings that highlighted concerns over mental health, alcohol use, financial stress, and personal struggles faced by Fairfax following his exit from public office in 2022.
Police said the case remains under investigation by the Fairfax County authorities and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
