Los Angeles, Apr 19: In a bizarre case of insurance fraud, three individuals in California have been sentenced for orchestrating a staged “bear attack” using a person dressed in a bear costume to damage luxury vehicles and claim insurance money.
According to the California Department of Insurance, the accused carried out the scheme in 2024 under an operation dubbed “Bear Claw.” The group allegedly used a bear suit to simulate attacks inside high-end cars, including a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes-Benz vehicles, before filing fraudulent claims amounting to nearly $1.42 lakh (approximately $142,000).

Two men and a woman from the Los Angeles area pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud charges. They have been sentenced to a weekend jail programme followed by probation. Authorities said two of the accused have also been directed to pay over $50,000 in restitution.
A fourth accused is expected to face a court hearing in September.
Investigators revealed that the group submitted video footage purportedly showing a bear inside the vehicles in the San Bernardino Mountains, along with images of damage such as scratches on seats and doors.
However, suspicions were raised after a biologist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife examined the footage and concluded that it was “clearly a human in a bear suit.”
Subsequent searches led detectives to recover the bear costume from the suspects’ residence, confirming the staged nature of the incidents.
Officials noted that while real bear intrusions are not uncommon in parts of California—from Lake Tahoe to suburban Los Angeles foothills—this case stood out for its unusual and elaborate attempt to exploit the situation for financial gain.
The incident highlights the increasing sophistication of insurance fraud schemes and the role of forensic analysis in uncovering such deceptive practices.
