Udhampur bus tragedy claims 21 lives, dozens injured

Jammu, Apr 20: The number of fatalities in the tragic bus accident in Udhampur district has climbed to 21, Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh confirmed on Monday. He also reported that 61 people sustained injuries in the incident.

Sharing an update on social media, Singh stated that the injured have been admitted to Udhampur Hospital, while one critically injured individual is being airlifted to Government Medical College in Jammu for advanced treatment. He extended condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and assured that authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

The accident took place earlier in the day when a passenger bus traveling from Ramnagar to Udhampur town overturned under unclear circumstances. Rescue operations were immediately launched, with emergency teams prioritizing medical assistance for the injured.

According to Additional Deputy Commissioner Prem Singh, some of the victims have been shifted to the Government Medical College in Udhampur, while others are receiving treatment in Ramnagar. He emphasized that providing urgent care remains the top priority.

Officials have begun investigating the cause of the accident, though initial reports indicate that the bus lost control and overturned. Further details are expected as the inquiry progresses.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it “heartbreaking.” He conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and wished a swift recovery to the injured. He also directed local authorities, police, SDRF, and health departments to ensure full support to those affected.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed grief over the tragedy, offering condolences to the victims’ families and assuring that the government stands firmly with them during this difficult time. He confirmed that all necessary aid is being extended.

Road accidents in the hilly regions of Jammu and Kashmir are often attributed to factors such as overloading, speeding, reckless driving, and poor road conditions. In response, traffic authorities have deployed special teams across these areas to enforce regulations and reduce such incidents, aiming to prevent further loss of life.
