New Delhi, Mar 9 (IANS): Condemning the killing of an IPS officer while he was trying to stop a tractor laden with illegally-quarried stones in Madhya Pradesh, Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal Friday called for a stringent whistleblower protection law.
Narendra Kumar, 32, sub-divisional police officer of Bamor, from the Indian Police Service (IPS), was crushed to death Thursday in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh.
"No more routine condolence statements from some ministers needed. Can't government ensure that no more such people would be killed now? So many people have already laid down their lives fighting corruption. Government, please wake up. Please do something," Kejriwal said on micro-blogging site Twitter.
He called for a strong whistleblower law to protect the people who raise voice against corruption and corrupt officials.
"Strong whistleblower protection law needed, not the one presented by central government. Government's law seeks to protect the corrupt and victimize whistleblowers," he said.
"When will this stop? System supports corrupt people and victimises those fighting them. Narendra Kumar, 2009 batch IPS officer crushed by a tractor allegedly by mining mafia. So many killed last few years fighting corruption," he added.
Kiran Bedi, former IPS officer and another member of Team Anna, said: "Corrupt politician-politicised bureaucracy, weak police leadership creates life threatening crime situations for brave young IPS entrants."
