Gaza holds first vote since 2006 as Deir el-Balah municipal polls test Hamas support

Gaza, Apr 22: Palestinians in Gaza’s Deir el-Balah are set to vote this weekend in the territory’s first election of any kind since 2006, in a municipal poll seen as a rare test of support for Hamas and a symbolic assertion of Palestinian unity.

The vote forms part of Palestinian Authority municipal elections, which Palestinian leaders have projected as a message against efforts they believe seek to deepen Gaza’s separation from the West Bank.

Around 70,000 eligible voters are expected to cast ballots across 12 polling centres in Deir el-Balah, including open fields and tent-based stations.

The election marks Gaza’s first vote since Hamas won Palestinian legislative elections in 2006 and later seized control of the enclave following conflict with President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement.

Four candidate lists are contesting the municipal polls, including one reportedly featuring several candidates viewed as pro-Hamas, though Hamas has not officially fielded a list or endorsed candidates.

Analysts say the performance of those candidates may offer a barometer of Hamas’ popularity in Gaza, even as the group has formally boycotted the polls over disagreements with the Palestinian Authority on election conditions.

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the group would respect the outcome, while sources indicated Hamas security personnel would help secure voting sites.

The Palestinian Authority said Deir el-Balah was chosen because it suffered less damage than other parts of war-ravaged Gaza.

The vote comes amid renewed international focus on Gaza’s political future, including a US-backed proposal envisioning reconstruction under a technocratic Palestinian committee, a plan Hamas has rejected.

Political analysts say the municipal election carries symbolic weight, sending a message that Gaza remains part of the broader Palestinian political system.

For many residents, the poll is also seen as a chance to rebuild civic life after years of conflict and destruction.
