Coastal K'taka swelters under rising temperatures; yellow alert issued for 5 days

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Apr 23: Coastal Karnataka is currently reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures in Mangaluru soaring above 38°C during peak afternoon hours. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'Yellow Alert' for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts, predicting that the severe heat and humid conditions will persist for the next five days.

Impact on daily life

The scorching sun has significantly affected public life across the coastal belt. Streets in Mangaluru have been wearing a deserted look between 12 pm and 3 pm, with a noticeable dip in the number of passengers traveling by bus. Residents are increasingly relying on air conditioning and turning to cold beverages, coconut water, and fruits to combat the dehydration caused by the heat. Some have even sought relief by visiting rivers and beaches for a dip.

Crisis for animals and birds

The rising mercury levels have proven equally challenging for animals and birds. Stray cattle, dogs, and pigeons are suffering from exhaustion and dehydration due to the lack of available drinking water. Pet owners have been advised to keep their animals in shaded areas and ensure a steady supply of water.

Health advisory and precautions

In light of the extreme weather, authorities and health experts have issued several guidelines for the public to stay safe:

  • Avoid direct sunlight: Residents are advised to stay indoors between 12 pm and 3 pm and avoid traveling during these hours.

  • Stay hydrated: It is essential to drink water frequently and carry a water bottle while working or traveling.

  • Dietary choices: Experts recommend consuming hot food while avoiding alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks that can lead to further dehydration.

  • Medical attention: Immediate medical help should be sought if anyone feels faint or unwell due to the heat.

As the high temperature and humidity are expected to continue throughout the week, people in the coastal districts have been urged to exercise maximum caution.
