Mangaluru, Apr 23: The comprehensive development project for the Mangaluru Central railway station has undergone a major revision, with the estimated budget being reduced from the initial Rs 340 crore to Rs 95 crore.

The information was revealed during the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting held at the Netravati Hall of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, presided over by MP Captain Brijesh Chowta. Railway officials from the Palakkad Division informed the committee that the Railway Board re-evaluated the previous ambitious proposal and directed that the cost be limited to under Rs 100 crore. Consequently, a new action plan worth Rs 95 crore has received approval.

The project is currently in the final review stage at the zonal headquarters and is likely to be implemented under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model. Under this redevelopment plan, the station will be equipped with lifts, escalators, improved parking facilities, and other essential passenger amenities.

Expansion and infrastructure updates

Officials also stated that works worth Rs 23 crore are already underway at Mangaluru Central. This includes the extension of platform capacity from 22 coaches to 24 coaches, which is expected to be completed within the next two months. Additionally, a tender process to widen the road at the Pandeshwar level crossing from two lanes to four lanes will commence within a week.

Amrit Bharat Scheme and new stations

Regarding Mangaluru Junction, officials confirmed that development works worth Rs 20 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme have been completed. This includes upgraded platform shelters, parking areas, and a renovated station building.

Furthermore, a feasibility study is being conducted regarding the establishment of new railway stations near Padil and the Mangaluru International Airport. The matter is currently being discussed between the DRM and the Railway Board.

The railway department emphasized that these measures are part of a phased effort to improve rail infrastructure in the city and provide better services to passengers.
