Moodbidri, Apr 24: Bringing an end to a prolonged six-year legal battle, 58-year-old expatriate Joseph Cardoza from Moodbidri has been cleared of all allegations in Saudi Arabia, with authorities lifting the travel ban imposed on him.
Joseph, who had been working as a vehicle mechanic for a port company in Dammam, found himself entangled in a legal case nearly six years ago after being accused of involvement in a financial extortion attempt, an allegation he maintained he was unaware of and innocent of. He was summoned to a police station in Aziziyah, Riyadh, where he cooperated with officials and was detained for three days before being released.
Though he resumed work, his difficulties continued when renewal of his port access pass was denied, later revealing that a travel ban had been placed on him in 2020. The restriction prevented him from returning home despite repeated efforts by his employer to process his exit and re-entry visa. Over the years, he was summoned multiple times by the Niyabah (Public Prosecution), prolonging the uncertainty.
Seeking legal support, Joseph approached Dr and advocate P A Hameed Padubidri, a Udupi-based pro-bono lawyer and social worker in Riyadh. With his assistance and coordination with the employer, the case gradually progressed. During a recent appearance before the Niyabah, Joseph was advised to remain consistent and truthful in his statements, which proved crucial.
On April 20, he received official confirmation that the travel ban had been lifted, clearing him of all charges. Expressing relief, Joseph said he had remained patient and confident throughout, trusting that the truth would prevail. He thanked God, his company for its support, and Dr P A Hameed for his unwavering assistance. He also acknowledged the support extended by social workers Nelson D’Souza and Francis Kundapura during the difficult period.
With the case now resolved, his employer is making arrangements for his exit re-entry visa, enabling him to return home after years of uncertainty.
