Mangaluru: Dr Rajkumar’s simplicity and ideals inspire youth

Mangaluru, Apr 24: The 97th birth anniversary of Dr Rajkumar was celebrated on April 24, at University College Mangaluru under the joint aegis of the Dakshina Kannada district administration, zilla panchayat, and the Department of Information and Public Relations.

Inaugurating the programme, Coastal Development Authority chairman M A Gaffoor said that the simplicity and ideal personality of Dr Rajkumar serve as a great inspiration to the youth. He emphasized that today’s generation should adopt the values and principles followed by the legendary actor in their lives.

He noted that Dr Rajkumar upheld simplicity and strong moral values throughout his life and earned a distinguished place in the Kannada film industry. Appreciating the government for celebrating his birth anniversary, Gaffoor added that youth who walk on the right path can shape themselves into responsible citizens.

Senior journalist P B Harish Rai, delivering a special lecture, described Dr Rajkumar as a leader who enriched Kannada culture. He pointed out that the actor refrained from portraying smoking and drinking scenes in films, as he believed his fans would follow his example. He said Dr Rajkumar was not only a reel-life hero but also a real-life role model.

Rai further said that despite being one of the most sought-after actors in Kannada cinema, Dr Rajkumar never acted in other language films. Having appeared in over 200 films across genres such as historical, devotional, and mythological, he portrayed a wide range of roles. Apart from acting, his singing also left a lasting impact. His films conveyed strong moral values along with entertainment.

He also recalled that although Dr Rajkumar had opportunities to enter politics, he chose to remain dedicated to the Kannada film industry. He actively participated in movements like the Gokak agitation, playing a significant role in upholding Kannada language and culture.

The programme was presided over by principal Prof Ganapathi Gowda S. Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademi president Joachim Stanley Alvares was also present.

Dr Abubakkar Siddiq welcomed the gathering, while district information officer B A Khader Shah proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by lecturer Dr Venkatesh Nayak.
