Los Angeles, Apr 26: The much-anticipated biographical film “Michael”, based on the life of pop icon Michael Jackson, has garnered early praise for its performances and musical sequences, while also sparking debate over its portrayal of the singer’s complex legacy.
Designer Manish Malhotra reacted to visuals from the film, commenting, “That’s my outfit,” while producer Warda Khan Nadiadwala lauded the project, saying the lead actor deserved major recognition and praising the continuation of Jackson’s story.
Fans also expressed excitement online, calling the visuals “iconic” and celebrating the meeting of “the queen of choreography and the king of pop.” Many also revisited Jackson’s classic album Thriller, particularly the hit song Billie Jean.

The film features Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in the titular role. The cast also includes Miles Teller as attorney John Branca, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Kat Graham as Diana Ross, and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson. Supporting roles are played by Laura Harrier, Kendrick Sampson, and Juliano Krue Valdi, who portrays a young Michael.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the film is co-produced by Graham King, John Branca and John McClain.
Early reviews have appreciated Jaafar Jackson’s performance and the film’s musical presentation. However, some critics have raised concerns about the narrative depth and how the film handles the more controversial aspects of Michael Jackson’s life.
The film traces Jackson’s journey from a child prodigy with the Jackson 5 to a global superstar who redefined pop culture, while also exploring the personal struggles behind the spotlight.
“Michael” was released in theatres on April 24, 2026.
