Washington, Apr 26: A heavily armed man carrying a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives was stopped by security forces after attempting to breach a checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, near a high-security event attended by senior US officials, authorities said.

Washington’s interim Police Chief Jeff Carroll confirmed that the suspect ran toward a Secret Service checkpoint around 8:36 p.m. before being intercepted by officers. The hotel was hosting guests linked to the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

Officials said the suspect was immediately engaged by personnel from the United States Secret Service, leading to an exchange of gunfire. During the confrontation, a Secret Service officer was struck by a bullet but survived after it was stopped by his protective vest and was later taken to hospital in stable condition.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect was not shot but was physically subdued and taken into custody at the scene. He was later transported to hospital for evaluation. Officials described him as acting alone and said there is currently no threat to the public.

US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the suspect appeared intent on causing significant harm and has already been charged with federal offences, including using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal officer. Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

Investigators believe the attacker never reached the main ballroom, where thousands of guests were present. Authorities credited layered security measures for preventing a potentially catastrophic incident.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has deployed its Joint Terrorism Task Force and forensic teams to assist in the probe. Officials are now reviewing surveillance footage, examining how the suspect gained access to the hotel with multiple weapons, and investigating a room believed to be linked to him.

Law enforcement agencies, including the United States Secret Service, emphasized that their rapid response prevented further escalation. The investigation remains ongoing, with motive and potential targets still under review.
