Washington, Apr 28: Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has defended a controversial joke made during his show after US President Donald Trump and the first lady called for his dismissal.
The controversy stems from a skit aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live! ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where Kimmel made a remark directed at the first lady that drew criticism. The issue escalated following an attempted attack at the event, leading to heightened scrutiny of the comedian’s comments.
Responding on his show Monday night, Kimmel said the remark was clearly intended as humour, referencing the couple’s age difference, and denied any suggestion that it incited violence. “It was not by any stretch a call to assassination, and they know that,” he said, adding that he has consistently spoken out against gun violence.

He also expressed regret over the incident at the event, calling it “traumatic and scary,” even though no fatalities were reported.
Authorities have charged 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen with attempting to assassinate the president, along with firearm-related offences.
Earlier in the day, Trump criticised Kimmel on his social media platform, calling the joke “despicable” and urging Disney and ABC to take immediate action against him.
The first lady also condemned the comedian, stating that individuals like Kimmel should not be allowed to broadcast content that spreads negativity and called on the network to act.
Kimmel, however, stood by his remarks, citing free speech protections. “As Americans, we have a right to free speech,” he said.
The president has previously criticised comedians for jokes at his expense, and the latest exchange adds to ongoing tensions between political figures and late-night television hosts in the United States.
