Bishkek, Apr 28: Defence minister Rajnath Singh called for a strong and unified global response against terrorism, separatism, and extremism while addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Meeting held in Bishkek.

Emphasising the need to dismantle terror safe havens and reject any justification for such activities, Singh said that terrorism must be confronted without “double standards” or selective approaches. He stressed that state-sponsored cross-border terrorism poses a serious threat to national sovereignty and global stability.

Referring to India’s counter-terror operations, Singh stated that Operation Sindoor reflected India’s firm resolve that terror hubs are no longer beyond accountability.

He urged SCO member nations to take decisive action against those who support or harbour terrorist groups, saying that eliminating terrorism, separatism, and extremism would turn regional security challenges into opportunities for peace and prosperity.

Singh highlighted counter-terrorism as a core principle of the SCO, noting that past declarations, including the Tianjin Declaration, reflect a shared commitment among member countries. He also pointed to the role of the SCO’s Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure in strengthening cooperation against radicalisation and extremism.

Calling for global reflection on governance and peace, Singh questioned the need for a “more orderly world” that prioritises dignity, coexistence, and compassion over conflict and chaos. He emphasised that differences should not escalate into disputes, and disputes should not lead to disasters.

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, he said violence only leads to collective harm and stressed that power must be used responsibly, especially in the interest of the vulnerable. He reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy should guide international relations rather than force.

Singh also invoked India’s philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, underscoring the importance of global unity beyond differences of race, religion, and geography.

During the meeting, SCO members discussed issues related to security, terrorism, and radicalisation, as well as their impact on global peace. They also acknowledged the growing relevance of the organisation ahead of its 25th anniversary in 2026, amid increasing global uncertainty.

The Defence Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening cooperation within the SCO framework and building mutual trust among member states to promote long-term peace and stability.
