Vadodara, May 1: Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda has announced a major revision in its academic curriculum, introducing mandatory coursework on the history of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the governing principles associated with the current administration.
Under the revised structure, students in the Sociology Department will be required to study these subjects as part of their core syllabus. University officials said the move is aimed at connecting students with contemporary ideological movements and the cultural foundations of the nation, marking a shift in academic approach.
The decision is also intended to bridge the gap between academic research and practical governance. According to academic inputs cited by the university, the RSS’s social work contributions warrant scholarly attention, especially for students of social sciences and public policy.

Officials noted that recent research initiatives linked to NITI Aayog have already seen students engaging with government programmes, and the formal inclusion of such topics is viewed as a step towards documenting key ideological trends within academia.
A component titled “Modi Tatva” will focus on analysing the leadership philosophy and governance model of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The university described Modi as a transformative leader, highlighting initiatives such as Digital India as significant influences on the country’s socio-economic landscape.
The administration also cited growing student interest in understanding contemporary governance models and their societal impact.
However, the move has triggered debate within academic circles. While some have supported the inclusion as offering practical insights into influential organisations and leadership, others argue that academic curricula should remain distanced from political figures and specific ideological narratives.
