Lucknow, May 3: A special CBI court in Lucknow has convicted an accused in connection with the 2015 killing of a police inspector in Uttar Pradesh, sentencing him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

The court found Jishan Khan guilty in the culpable homicide of Inspector Anil Kumar, who was serving as SHO of Kotwali Police Station in Pratapgarh at the time of the incident. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of Rs 9,000.

According to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the judgment was delivered on May 2 after the court examined the evidence on record along with the accused’s confessional statement submitted during trial.

The case dates back to November 19, 2015, when Inspector Anil Kumar was found dead at a hotel premises in Pratapgarh. Initially registered as a murder case by local police, the investigation was later transferred to the CBI following directions from the Allahabad High Court (Lucknow Bench).

The CBI took over the probe in June 2018 and subsequently filed a chargesheet against two individuals, including Jishan Khan and a co-accused. The court took cognisance of the case in February 2021, and charges were formally framed in December 2022.

During the trial, Jishan Khan submitted a written confession in April 2026. Following this, his case was separated from that of the co-accused and heard independently.

In its order, the Special Judge observed that the conviction was based on the available evidence and the voluntary confession made by the accused.

While the sentencing brings partial closure to a case that has been under investigation for over a decade, proceedings against the co-accused are continuing separately.
