Patna, May 4: A festive journey turned into a horrific tragedy in Bihar’s Rohtas district after five people were killed when a speeding truck crashed into a group returning from a wedding-related ceremony.

The accident took place early Monday near Mathiya village under the Dinara police station area on National Highway 319, close to Sasaram. According to officials, the victims were returning from a Tilak ceremony when the fatal collision occurred around 3 am.

Police said the group had stepped off a bus and was standing on the highway near a parked pickup vehicle when an uncontrolled truck rammed into them, causing multiple fatalities and panic at the scene.

The deceased have been identified as Ramadutt Singh from Bhagwanpur village, Ashok Singh (father of the bride), Pintu Singh (maternal uncle of the bride), and Rajnish Kumar, all believed to be from the same family. One victim is yet to be identified.

Authorities from Dinara police station rushed to the spot, carried out rescue operations, and cleared the damaged vehicles with the help of a crane. The truck, bus, and pickup involved in the incident have been seized.

The bodies have been sent to Sasaram Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination, while a formal investigation is underway. Police have registered an FIR against the unknown truck driver for rash and negligent driving, and efforts are on to trace and arrest him.
