Moodbidri, May 4: A spirit of reverence and joy filled Corpus Christi Church on Sunday as fifteen children—ten boys and five girls—received their first holy communion, marking a significant milestone in their spiritual journey.
The solemn celebration began with the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, led by Immanuel Monis, followed by benediction.
The holy Eucharistic Mass was presided over by most Rev Bishop Dr Francis Serrao of the Mysore diocese. He was joined by Fr Onil D’Souza, vicar forane and parish priest of Corpus Christi Church, along with Fr Leo Moras and Fr Lancy D’Souza.
In a touching procession, the children, all around ten years old and dressed in white, were escorted to the church by the Corpus Christi Children’s Band, accompanied by their parents and clergy. In his introductory message, the Bishop reminded the faithful, “We who receive Jesus in our hearts become the tabernacle of God.”
The First Holy Communion children actively participated in the liturgy, supported by the harmonious singing of the church choir. In his homily, Fr Onil D’Souza emphasized the importance of the Eucharist, describing it as 'lifetime insurance', highlighting that a deep relationship with Jesus on earth leads to eternal communion in heaven. He also urged parents to nurture their children in faith through regular participation in the Eucharist and by instilling Christ-like values.
At the end of the Mass, each child received a blessed rosary and scapular brought from Rome by the bishop, symbolising their spiritual commitment.
Fr Onil expressed gratitude to Sr Ranitha AC and the catechism teachers for their dedicated preparation.
The celebration concluded with a communal breakfast, fostering unity and fellowship among the parish community.
