Ponda, May 5: Police in Ponda have arrested the second accused in the killing of 58-year-old Deepak Naik, bringing a swift development in the case that shocked the local community.

The accused, 22-year-old Gaurish Naik from Borim, had been on the run after the incident on Sunday. He was tracked down and apprehended while hiding at his maternal aunt’s house in the remote Torla-Shiroda area.

According to police, the murder stemmed from a minor dispute over roof tiles placed near the victim’s house. The argument escalated when Gaurish and his brother Saideep Naik confronted Deepak, claiming the tiles were causing inconvenience.

During the altercation, Gaurish allegedly attacked the victim with an axe, resulting in fatal injuries. Saideep was arrested shortly after the incident, while Gaurish fled the scene.

Authorities confirmed that Saideep has been remanded to police custody by the Judicial Magistrate First Class in Ponda, while further investigation continues.
