Activist alleges attack over objection to mangrove destruction

Panaji, May 8: Activist Kashinath Shetye has alleged that he was attacked and threatened with a koita and stones by a person from St Cruz after objecting to the alleged illegal filling of salt pans and destruction of mangroves in the area.

According to Shetye, the incident occurred when he questioned the ongoing activities, which he claimed were linked to suspected land fraud.

The activist alleged that the accused threatened and attempted to intimidate him for raising objections against the alleged destruction of ecologically sensitive land.

Shetye further stated that the issue concerning the alleged illegal filling of salt pans and cutting of mangroves was already pending before a court.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, the activities were allegedly continuing in the area, he claimed.

The activist has demanded strict action against those involved and urged authorities to protect environmentally sensitive zones from alleged encroachment and illegal land development.
