Malappuram (Kerala), May 12: The delay in announcing a chief minister after the United Democratic Front’s decisive victory in Kerala has sparked growing unease within the alliance, with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) expressing open frustration over the continued uncertainty.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), which secured 102 seats in the 140-member Kerala Assembly, is yet to formally announce its chief ministerial candidate nine days after the election result, leading to internal and coalition-level tensions.

In response to the prolonged deadlock, the IUML—second-largest constituent of the alliance—has called an emergency leadership meeting at Panakkad on Wednesday. The meeting is expected to determine the party’s stance amid rising dissatisfaction over the delay.
Party leaders are reportedly concerned that the lack of clarity is creating public discomfort and administrative uncertainty at a critical juncture following the electoral mandate.
The IUML has conveyed its position that the Chief Minister should be a leader directly elected by the people. While the party is unlikely to oppose a consensus choice such as Ramesh Chennithala, it is understood to have reservations regarding reported discussions within the Congress high command about elevating K C Venugopal to the top post.
Sources indicate that the Panakkad meeting will also deliberate on the IUML’s response if the Congress leadership finalises a decision that does not align with its expectations. The party is also reportedly upset that coalition partners were not adequately consulted during the leadership discussions.
Several IUML leaders and MLAs have publicly voiced concern, warning that continued indecision could damage public confidence in the newly elected alliance government.
Party insiders say the growing sentiment among voters is one of impatience, with questions being raised about governance delays and administrative vacuum even after a clear electoral verdict.
Key routine administrative matters remain pending, with even important announcements—such as SSLC examination results—being made without a formal ministerial head in place, further fuelling criticism.
Meanwhile, consultations continue in Delhi between senior Congress leaders, with party president Mallikarjun Kharge expected to hold discussions with senior leader Rahul Gandhi to finalise the leadership decision.
Congress sources suggest that a final announcement on the Chief Ministerial candidate could be made within the next 24 hours, even as tensions within the alliance continue to intensify.
