Udupi, May 18: Padubidri police Station arrested two persons on charges of alleged illegal cattle transportation and animal cruelty during an early morning operation in Padubidri on Sunday.

According to police, PSI (Investigation) Anil Kumar T Naik received credible information at around 6.40 am on May 18 that cattle were being transported from Karkala towards Padubidri in a goods vehicle.

Acting swiftly on the tip-off, a police team intercepted a KA-19-A-6151 407 Turbo vehicle at Kajanadka in Inna village within the jurisdiction of Padubidri police station.

During inspection, police allegedly found three cattle tied and being transported in a cruel manner in violation of animal welfare norms.

The accused were identified as Ismail (42), a resident of Abbas Gudde in Nadsalu village of Kapu taluk, and Karnire Mohammed (62), a resident of Karnire village in Mulki taluk. Both were taken into custody and later produced before the court.

Police sources said Ismail has a criminal background linked to alleged illegal cattle transportation and cattle slaughter prohibition offences. Cases are reportedly pending against him at Barke police station, Mulki police station, Bantwal Town police station, Surathkal police station, Karkala Town police station and Hebri police station.

Police said the seized vehicle and rescued cattle together are estimated to be worth around Rs 4.25 lac.

The operation was carried out under the leadership of PSI Anil Kumar T Naik along with ASI Dinakar, HC Naveen Kumar, HC Ashwin Kumar, HC Krishna Prasad, PC Sandesh, PC Prabhu Athani, PC Raghavendra, PC Annappa and PC Sridhar.
