Engineering student drowns in Netravati river near Beltangady

Beltangady, May 20: An engineering student drowned while swimming in the Netravati river near Pajiradka temple in Beltangady taluk after a group of seven students went to the river for a swim.

The incident occurred at around 4 pm on May 19 at the Netravati river in Pajiradka of Kalmanja village in Beltangady taluk. The deceased has been identified as Shripoorna (21), a native of Gokak in Belagavi district and a final-year engineering student of a private college in Ujire.

Soon after receiving information about the incident, locals launched a search operation to trace the youth’s body in the river. Local residents, fire and emergency personnel, and the Shaurya disaster response team reached the spot and carried out a rescue operation through the night.

The body was finally recovered from the river at around 9.30 pm.

Dharmasthala police station sub-inspector Samarth R Ganigere and his team visited the spot, conducted an inspection, and registered a case.
