Beltangady, May 25: Trekking spots and prominent waterfalls across Beltangady taluk are set to reopen for tourists starting June 1. The wildlife division of the forest department had previously imposed a ban on visiting popular destinations such as Netravati Peak, Bandaje Falls, and Gadaikallu in January.
The restriction was implemented primarily to prevent forest fires during the dry summer months and to facilitate the tiger census. Malavanthige village in the taluk, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kudremukh National Park, is home to numerous tourist attractions. While it draws trekkers and nature enthusiasts in large numbers, the risk of wildfires in these dense forest areas during summer remains high. As tourists often ignore safety warnings, the forest department had imposed the ban as a strict precautionary measure.

Thanks to the recent summer showers, the forest areas are now wet, lush green, and streams have begun to flow normally. With the threat of forest fires subsiding, authorities have decided to lift the restrictions. Kadamagundi and Bolle waterfalls are already open to the public, while Ermayi falls, being located on private property, had no such entry restrictions.
Gadaikallu in Nada-Laila village, another major trekking destination standing 1,700 feet above sea level, will also be accessible from June 1. Entry here was banned in February due to fire warnings and the tiger census. However, authorities noted that entry to Gadaikallu might be restricted again during the peak monsoon season if heavy rains make the rocky terrain dangerously slippery.
The forest department has laid down strict guidelines for visitors:
-
Tourists and trekkers must prioritize maintaining the cleanliness of the environment.
-
Strict action will be taken against individuals found engaging in illegal or undesirable activities.
-
Entry is permitted only during the specified hours (morning to evening). Night stays are strictly prohibited.
-
Tourists must strictly adhere to all rules set by the forest department.
-
Wandering outside the areas designated by the department is not allowed.
-
Every tourist must mandatorily carry an original identity card. Entry will be denied to those without a valid ID.
