Kasargod-origin scientist Dr Rama B Bhat passes away in Canada

Kasargod, May 26: Dr Rama B Bhat, noted scientist and former dean of the mechanical engineering department at Concordia University, Montreal, passed away at his residence in Toronto due to age-related illness. He was 83.

Born in Dharmathadka in Kasargod district, Dr Bhat completed his bachelor’s degree in engineering from KREC Surathkal, now known as National Institute of Technology Karnataka. He later obtained his MTech degree from Indian Institute of Technology Madras and earned a PhD in Sound and Vibration.

During his distinguished academic and research career, Dr Bhat worked at the Tumba Rocket Centre near Thiruvananthapuram and later at NASA in the United States.

He guided more than 100 PhD scholars, authored engineering textbooks, published over 200 research papers and presented research findings at several international conferences.

Apart from his contributions to science and engineering, Dr Bhat also made notable contributions to literature. He authored two English novels, a Kannada poetry anthology and a book based on his life experiences.

He is survived by his wife Parvathi Bhat, daughters Dr Mamatha Bhat and Dr Aparna Bhat, sons-in-law and grandsons.

    I am shocked to hear the passing of my very good friend Dr Rama Bhat . Laxmi and I Send our heartfelt condolences to Mrs Bhat and family . He and I have known each other from his IIT days and I continued on the same research set up Dr Bhat conducted his PhD Thesis under the same guide Dr BV A Rao in iit madras Dr Bhat was a renowned scholar in acoustics and vibration and an outstanding administrator at the Concordia university and excelled in many hobbies ..We pray God almighty to rest his soul in peace and grant strength to his family during this difficult time .
