Taiwan detects 9 Chinese aircraft and 6 naval vessels near island amid rising cross-strait tensions

Taipei, May 28: Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) on Thursday reported fresh military activity by China near the island, with nine PLA aircraft sorties and six Chinese naval vessels detected operating around Taiwanese territory.

According to the ministry, all nine aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s central and southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ).

Taiwan said its armed forces closely monitored the situation and responded appropriately to the movements.

The latest incursion comes amid increasing military pressure from Beijing in recent weeks. On Wednesday, Taiwan had detected 10 Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels around its territory.

A day earlier, the island nation reported the presence of 29 PLA aircraft sorties, seven naval vessels and one official Chinese ship near its territorial waters.

The repeated military movements by China have further escalated tensions across the Taiwan Strait, one of the most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints in the region.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump recently stated that Washington would continue to engage on the Taiwan issue and claimed the situation was “under control”.

Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on May 21, Trump said the United States would “work on the Taiwan problem” while referring to his recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping as positive.

China continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory and has repeatedly asserted that reunification with the island remains a national priority.

However, Taiwan operates independently with its own democratic government, military and economy, maintaining a separate political identity despite growing pressure from Beijing.

The Taiwan issue remains a key source of tension between China and the United States and continues to attract global attention over concerns relating to regional stability and security.
