Udupi, May 29: A firefighting demonstration and fire safety awareness workshop was jointly organised by Anegundi Guruseva Parishad, Thenkanidiyoor Mandala, Udupi district, in association with the Gold and Silver Workers Association, Udupi, and the Fire and Emergency Services Department, Udupi district.
The workshop was held on May 28 at Shrimad Jagadguru Anegundi Maha Samsthana Saraswathi Peetha, Katpady, Padukutyar.

During the programme, officials from the fire and emergency services department conducted practical demonstrations on handling fire emergencies and explained various methods of extinguishing fire. A live demonstration on controlling LPG cylinder fire accidents was also held, creating awareness among the participants.
Speaking on the occasion, a fire department official explained that fire is a chemical reaction and requires three elements to occur - combustible material, oxygen, and heat. “The fire can be controlled in three ways: by separating combustible materials from the fire source, by using wet blankets to cut off oxygen supply, and by cooling the fire using water,” the official said.
The official further informed that fires are broadly classified into four categories - Class A, B, C, and D fires. He cautioned against using water to extinguish certain types of fires, especially electrical and fuel-based fires, as it may worsen the situation. Instead, dry chemical powder extinguishers are recommended for such incidents.
Guidelines on handling LPG gas leakage emergencies were also shared during the session. Officials advised that in case of gas leakage, doors and windows should be opened immediately for ventilation and the regulator should be turned off if possible. If the cylinder catches fire, it should be covered carefully with a wet blanket to control the flames.
