Mumbai, Jun 1: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday intensified efforts to facilitate the construction of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) by demolishing around 150 unauthorised residential and commercial structures in Amar Nagar and Khindipada.

The demolition drive was carried out by the BMC's T-Ward office as part of a major clearance operation aimed at removing obstacles along the alignment of the crucial infrastructure project, which is designed to improve connectivity between Mumbai's eastern and western suburbs.

Officials said a total of 384 unauthorised structures in Amar Nagar, Khindipada, were identified as hindering the progress of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project. Of these, nearly 150 structures were removed during Monday's operation, while the remaining 234 structures are scheduled to be demolished next week.

The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road is a key transportation project spanning 12.20 kilometres and is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the city's eastern and western corridors. The project includes multiple components such as a roadway, underground tunnel, flyovers and related infrastructure works.

According to civic officials, the project is being executed in four phases to ensure smoother implementation and minimise disruption during construction.

The latest demolition exercise is expected to accelerate work on the ambitious link road, which is considered one of Mumbai's most important ongoing transport infrastructure projects. Once completed, the corridor is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve east-west connectivity and provide faster travel options for commuters across the city.

BMC officials stated that further clearance operations will continue in the coming days to ensure that construction progresses as per schedule and that all remaining obstructions along the project route are removed.
