Sydney, Jun 11: Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Tanvi Sharma advanced to the women's singles quarterfinals of the Australian Open after registering impressive victories in Sydney on Thursday.

Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu defeated compatriot Isharani Baruah 22-20, 21-12 in the Round of 16 encounter. She will next take on Chen Su-yu in the quarterfinals.

In another all-Indian pre-quarterfinal clash, Tanvi Sharma outclassed Malvika Bansod 21-13, 21-15 to secure her place in the last eight.

In the men's doubles event, the Indian pair of MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan progressed to the quarterfinals with a comfortable 21-17, 21-7 victory over New Zealand's Michael Owen and Dylan Soedjasa.

However, India's campaign in the men's singles competition came to an end in the opening round after defeats for Kiran George, Saneeth Dayanand and Tharun Mannepalli in their respective matches.

With Sindhu, Tanvi, Arjun and Hariharan still in contention, India will look to continue its strong run in the tournament's later stages.
