Srinivas University hosts international congregation on mass disaster management

Mangaluru, Jun 12: The Department of Forensic Medicine, Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre (SIMS&RC), Srinivas University, organised an international congregation on mass disaster management themed “One World, One Response” at Mukka campus.

The programme was presided over by Prof Er A Mitra S Rao, member, Board of Governors, Srinivas University. Bhaskar Rao, IPS (Retd.), vice president, Indian Red Cross Society, Karnataka State Branch, attended as the chief guest. Prof K Satyanarayana Reddy, vice chancellor, Srinivas University, Meghana S Rao, member, Board of Governors, Srinivas University, Dr Udaykumar, dean SIMS & RC, Dr David Rosario, medical siperitendant Srinivas Hospital were present on the occasion.

In his keynote address, Bhaskar Rao highlighted the growing threat of natural and man-made disasters, including climate change, pandemics, cyber threats, industrial hazards, and road accidents. He stressed the importance of disaster preparedness, first-aid training, community participation, and early warning systems, while urging educational institutions to create greater awareness among students.

Presiding over the function, Prof Er A Mitra S Rao emphasized the need for mindfulness, compassion, and responsible citizenship in addressing disasters. Reflecting on the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and personal experiences of loss, she urged people to live in harmony with nature and remain prepared for unforeseen challenges.

Addressing the gathering, Prof K Satyanarayana Reddy stated that environmental degradation, rapid urbanisation, technological vulnerabilities, and climate change are increasing disaster risks worldwide. He emphasised the principles of prediction, prevention, preparedness, protection, and resilience in disaster management and proposed specialized educational programmes to develop skilled disaster response professionals.

Dr Vrinda J Bhat, organising chairperson, professor and head, Department of Forensic Medicine, welcomed the gathering. The dignitaries were introduced by Shanwil Shaun D'Souza. Dr Prashantha Bhagavath, organising secretary, delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Dr Swathi and Rashmi.

The congregation brought together experts, academicians, healthcare professionals, and students to deliberate on strategies for effective disaster preparedness, response, and resilience, reinforcing the message of “One World, One Response.”
