Mumbai, Jun 19: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday removed nine unauthorised shops and other illegal structures encroaching on public footpaths in Andheri as part of its ongoing drive against encroachments.
According to civic officials, the action was carried out by the K West Ward on June 18 to restore pedestrian access and ensure public spaces remain free from obstructions.

During the operation, one unauthorised shop on Fun Republic Road was demolished, while another illegal establishment was seized. On Veera Desai Road, civic teams razed eight unauthorised shops that had occupied public spaces.
Officials also removed illegally constructed sheds and staircases built on footpaths, which were hindering pedestrian movement and reducing available walking space.
Following the demolition drive, footpaths in the affected areas were cleared and made accessible for pedestrians, improving safety and ease of movement for residents.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of Deputy Municipal Commissioner Dr Bhagyashree Kapase and led by K West Ward Assistant Commissioner Chakrapani Alle. Personnel from the ward’s maintenance, building and factory, licensing and public health departments participated in the drive using specialised equipment.
Police personnel from Amboli Police Station provided security during the operation to ensure smooth execution and maintain law and order.
BMC officials said similar anti-encroachment drives will continue across Mumbai to safeguard public spaces and improve pedestrian infrastructure.
