Hardoi, Jun 24: A 28-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by members of his wife's family in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi district over a love marriage that had faced opposition from both families since last year, police said.
The victim, identified as Vivek Kanaujia, an e-rickshaw driver, was allegedly attacked after returning to his native village in Badruddinpur along with his wife Poonam and their seven-month-old son.
According to police, Vivek and Poonam had married in May 2024 against the wishes of their families. Following the marriage, the couple shifted to Noida and had been living there due to continued opposition from relatives.

Police said tensions resurfaced when the family recently returned to the village. According to allegations made by the victim's family and his wife, several members of Poonam's maternal family arrived at their residence on Monday evening and confronted the couple over the marriage.
The argument allegedly turned violent, with Poonam's father, uncle and brothers attacking Vivek with sticks and canes.
During the assault, Poonam reportedly managed to escape and took shelter at a neighbour's house.
Recalling the incident, Poonam said the couple had informed their families about their decision to marry and were subsequently told not to remain in the village.
"We shifted to Noida, but after returning, they started harassing us again. A fight broke out and they beat us badly. My father, uncle and brother attacked us. I somehow reached my uncle's house and the police were informed," she said.
Police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured Vivek to a medical college for treatment. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Hardoi Additional Superintendent of Police (West) Martand Prakash Singh said Vivek had approached Behta Gokul police station on the previous evening alleging assault by his in-laws, following which a case had been registered.
"He died during treatment today. Two accused, Ramgopal and Shyam, have been taken into custody," the officer said.
Based on a complaint lodged by Vivek's mother, Vimla, police have registered a murder case against seven named accused.
Authorities said inquest and post-mortem proceedings are underway, while efforts are continuing to apprehend the remaining accused.
