Tiruppur, Jun 29: A woman from Tiruppur district died following severe postpartum bleeding after attempting a home delivery allegedly based on videos watched on YouTube.
The deceased was identified as Shashikala, a resident of Thalaivaipalayam near Uthukuli in Tiruppur district.
On June 25, Shashikala attempted to deliver her baby at home, but the effort failed and she developed heavy bleeding after childbirth. She was initially admitted to the Perundurai Government Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Coimbatore for further treatment.

Doctors performed surgery and safely delivered the baby. The newborn was placed under observation. However, despite continued treatment, Shashikala died on Sunday.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Shashikala’s first delivery had been through a Caesarean section. According to reports, she wanted to have a normal delivery for her second child, following which her husband and mother-in-law decided to avoid hospital care and medical supervision and attempted a home delivery.
The investigation found that the family had watched YouTube videos before attempting the delivery at home.
During the delivery attempt, the placenta was reportedly not completely expelled, leading to severe postpartum haemorrhage, which eventually caused her death.
Meanwhile, doctors managed to save the newborn, who is currently under specialised medical care and observation.
Uthukuli police have registered a case and begun a detailed investigation into the incident.
