Indian Coast Guard averts crisis as flood-hit cargo ship safely guided towards Tuticorin

New Delhi, Jun 29: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully carried out an emergency response operation after cargo vessel MV SITTHAA reported severe flooding in multiple compartments while sailing off the coast of Tiruchendur in Tamil Nadu, officials said on Monday.

The emergency unfolded on June 27 when the vessel alerted authorities after water began entering several sections of the ship, raising concerns over its stability. Acting promptly, the Coast Guard deployed ICG Ship Atulya to the affected location to provide immediate assistance and prevent the situation from worsening.

Sharing details of the operation on social media platform X, the Coast Guard said a specialist boarding team was dispatched to the vessel to assess the situation and coordinate rescue efforts. The team worked alongside salvage experts to supervise emergency repairs and dewatering operations aimed at controlling the flooding.

According to the ICG, continuous monitoring ensured that the inflow of water remained under control, allowing the vessel to remain stable throughout the operation. After the situation was brought under control, the ship was advised to proceed to Tuticorin Port, where comprehensive repair work can be undertaken.

The Coast Guard maintained close coordination with the ship's master, the salvage agency and port authorities during the operation to ensure the safety of the crew, protect the vessel from further damage and minimise any potential environmental risks.

A video released by the Coast Guard showed personnel actively engaged in flood-control measures, including pumping out accumulated water from machinery spaces and supporting onboard emergency response efforts.

Officials said the successful handling of the incident once again demonstrated the Indian Coast Guard's rapid response capability and its commitment to ensuring maritime safety, safeguarding lives at sea and protecting the marine environment. The operation is the latest in a series of rescue and assistance missions carried out by the force in recent months.
