New Delhi, Jul 11: The Central government is considering introducing a uniform regulatory framework for messaging platforms operating in India following concerns surrounding WhatsApp's proposed username feature, according to multiple reports.
Sources indicated that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is examining the possibility of implementing common standards that would apply to all messaging services, rather than adopting separate regulations for individual platforms.
The move follows the government's objections to WhatsApp's proposed feature that would allow users to connect through usernames instead of sharing their mobile phone numbers. Officials have expressed concerns that such a feature could make it easier for cybercriminals to impersonate users, carry out phishing attacks, execute so-called digital arrest scams, and complicate law enforcement investigations.
To ensure a consistent regulatory approach, the Centre is now exploring guidelines that would govern all messaging applications offering similar functionalities. Before finalising any policy, the government is expected to hold consultations with leading messaging service providers.
Earlier this month, Telegram submitted its response to the government's notice regarding the username feature, after WhatsApp had also furnished its explanation.
The proposed username system is designed to enhance user privacy by enabling communication without revealing personal phone numbers. However, authorities believe the anonymity offered by the feature could also be exploited for fraudulent activities and identity impersonation.
Last week, the government formally asked WhatsApp to explain its proposal and advised the platform not to introduce the feature in India until discussions with the authorities are completed and regulatory concerns are addressed.
The Centre maintains that while user privacy remains important, any new communication feature must also include adequate safeguards to prevent misuse and support effective investigation of cybercrimes.
