New Delhi, Jul 24: Delhi is set to get its first integrated double-decker flyover by December this year, with the state government announcing that nearly 88 per cent of the construction work has been completed on the ambitious project aimed at easing traffic congestion in northeast Delhi.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the 1.4-km-long flyover on Wazirabad Road, being developed jointly by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), will feature a unique dual-level design, with Metro trains operating on the upper deck while vehicles use the flyover below.

Addressing a press conference, Gupta said 74 of the project's 80 deck slabs have already been completed, along with most of the crash barriers and expansion joints. The project, which faced technical and statutory delays earlier, is now progressing rapidly after the government approved a revised cost of Rs 291 crore.

Designed as an integrated transport corridor, the project also includes new approach roads, footpaths, drainage networks, electrical infrastructure, rainwater harvesting systems and modern road signage.

According to the government, the flyover is expected to provide major relief to commuters travelling through Yamuna Vihar and Bhajanpura, two of the city's most congested areas. Once operational, around 65 to 70 per cent of through traffic is expected to shift to the elevated corridor, leaving the surface road primarily for local traffic.

The project will also enable a largely signal-free commute between Gokulpuri and the Signature Bridge, reducing travel time and traffic bottlenecks.

The six-lane flyover will include a pre-cast viaduct and 140-metre-long ramps on either side.

Gupta also said the government is working to improve public services alongside infrastructure development. She noted that 95 key services across 18 government departments have been streamlined, while the processing time for 84 services has been reduced under the single-window system.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has approved another major infrastructure project—a 4-km signal-free elevated corridor along Sant Shri Nagpal (SSN) Marg in Chhatarpur—to ease chronic traffic congestion in south Delhi.
