New Delhi, Jul 28: The Union government on Tuesday summoned Meta's Global Head of Public Policy after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Facebook post on the Centre's measures to curb paper leaks was briefly removed from the social media platform, prompting the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to seek an explanation from the company.

According to official sources, MeitY has sought a detailed explanation from Meta regarding the circumstances under which the Prime Minister's post was taken down.

The post, uploaded on July 23 during the nationwide student protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), featured a video message in which Prime Minister Modi assured students that his government would take strict action against those involved in paper leaks and introduce stronger legal measures to ensure transparency in public examinations.

The temporary removal of the post drew the Centre's attention, following which the ministry called upon Meta to clarify whether the action resulted from a technical error or any content moderation process.

Responding to the controversy, a Meta spokesperson said the removal was inadvertent and that the post had been restored immediately after the error was detected.

"The content was removed in error and has since been restored," the spokesperson said.

The government is expected to examine Meta's explanation before deciding on any further action in the matter.
