Glasgow, Jul 29: Preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad have gained momentum, with a Gujarat delegation currently in Glasgow to study the planning and execution of the ongoing multi-sport event.
Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who also holds the sports portfolio, said officials handling different aspects of Games management have travelled to Glasgow to gain practical experience in organising an international sporting extravaganza.
Ahmedabad is set to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030, marking the return of the event to India after 20 years. India had earlier hosted the Games in New Delhi in 2010.
Speaking to reporters in Glasgow, Sanghavi said the delegation includes officials involved in venue management, transport planning, accreditation, athlete accommodation, sports facilities and overall Games delivery.
“Under the Prime Minister’s leadership, Ahmedabad is getting ready to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. Our entire team in Glasgow, from back-office management to Games delivery planning, has come here for training,” he said.
The delegation will participate in sports diplomacy programmes and training sessions until August 2 to understand the requirements of hosting athletes, officials and international federations.
Sanghavi said learning from Glasgow’s experience and interacting with global sports bodies would help Ahmedabad create world-class facilities and ensure smooth management of the event.
He added that every international federation has specific requirements and understanding these expectations regarding accommodation, infrastructure and athlete facilities would be crucial for the successful conduct of the Games.
As part of India’s promotional efforts, an Ahmedabad Experience Centre will also be inaugurated in Glasgow to showcase Gujarat’s culture, heritage and infrastructure to the Commonwealth sporting community.
The centre will offer visitors a glimpse of Ahmedabad’s traditions, Indian cuisine and development initiatives while facilitating interactions with athletes, sports federations and representatives from various countries.
Sanghavi said India is committed to making the 2030 Commonwealth Games a landmark event and ensuring that Ahmedabad delivers a memorable centenary edition of the prestigious sporting competition.
