New Delhi, Jul 30: A 27-year-old farmer died after a security guard’s gun accidentally went off inside a Union Bank branch in Delhi on Tuesday morning.

The deceased, identified as Manish Kumar, had visited the bank to update his Aadhaar details when he was hit by a bullet fired from the security guard’s weapon.

Police have arrested the security guard, Vinod Kumar (53), a retired Army serviceman, in connection with the incident.

According to police, the incident occurred around 10.30 am shortly after the bank opened. Vinod Kumar was loading cartridges into his 12-bore double-barrel gun when it accidentally discharged, with the bullet striking Manish in the back.

The gunshot created panic among customers and bank staff, who rushed out of the branch. Manish was found seriously injured and was shifted to Rao Tula Ram Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

During the investigation, police learnt that Vinod Kumar had arrived late for duty and was loading the firearm after customers and employees had already entered the bank premises. Officials said the gun may have fired due to negligence or a possible technical fault.

Vinod Kumar, a resident of Haryana’s Jhajjar district, had served in the Indian Army before retiring in 2018. He was working as a security guard at the Union Bank branch through a private security agency for the past two years.

Police have registered a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and further investigation is underway, including forensic examination of the weapon.
