Pune, Aug 4: A 42-year-old woman was killed in a road accident in Pune's Chakan MIDC area after her two-wheeler skidded on a muddy stretch of road and she was run over by a heavy vehicle on Tuesday. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and is being traced by police.

The deceased has been identified as Sanavi Panchal, a resident of Indrayani Nagar in Bhosari. She was employed as a security guard at Skoda Auto.

According to police, Panchal was returning home after completing her duty when the accident occurred at around 3.15 pm. Continuous rainfall had made the cement road slippery, causing her motorcycle to lose balance and skid on the muddy surface.

She fell onto the road and was crushed under the rear wheels of a heavy vehicle that was approaching from behind. She died on the spot.

The Chakan police have launched a search for the absconding driver and registered a case in connection with the incident.

The accident has once again brought the poor condition of roads in the Chakan MIDC area into focus, with residents and commuters raising concerns over muddy and unsafe road conditions during the monsoon.

Meanwhile, concerns over pothole-ridden roads continue on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway despite recent fatal accidents.

Even after the death of TDRF jawan Vikas Gore in a pothole-related accident, several dangerous stretches remain unrepaired. Near Koshimbi village at Padgha, motorists are reportedly navigating potholes measuring nearly six feet wide and two feet deep.

Drivers are forced to manoeuvre around the craters, with some vehicles even entering the wrong lane to avoid them, increasing the risk of collisions and traffic congestion.

Vikas Gore, a firefighter with the Thane Municipal Corporation, had died after his Bullet motorcycle struck a pothole near the Bharangi river bridge. Despite the fatal accident, commuters allege that little has been done to repair the damaged highway, leading to growing public criticism of the authorities over road safety.
