Washington, Aug 6: US Vice President JD Vance has said negotiations with Iran are likely to be prolonged and complicated, citing divisions within Tehran's leadership even as both sides continue diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict.

In an interview with Fox News, Vance said Iran's political system remains deeply divided, with some leaders seeking an end to the war while others continue to favour confrontation.

“The Iranians are extraordinarily difficult people. They have a fractured system. Some want the war to be over, while others are radical enough to want it to continue,” Vance said.

He added that the United States would continue to use military, economic and diplomatic tools to pursue a favourable outcome but cautioned against expecting a quick agreement.

“It’s going to be messy and it’s going to take some time,” he said, expressing confidence that the negotiations would ultimately benefit the United States. Vance also reiterated that Washington would not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons and predicted that global oil prices would decline once tensions ease.

His remarks came as Iran announced that it was in the final stages of drafting an agreement with Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global oil shipping route. The proposed arrangement could pave the way for reopening the strategic waterway and easing disruptions to global energy supplies.

Vance’s assessment appeared more cautious than that of President Donald Trump, who said on Wednesday that “a lot of progress” had been made and suggested greater clarity on the negotiations could emerge within 48 hours.

The renewed diplomatic efforts follow the collapse of a memorandum of understanding signed in June that had aimed to end hostilities. Key differences over Iran’s nuclear programme and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz continue to remain unresolved.
