Mumbai, Aug 7: A man was caught on camera allegedly abusing and threatening a woman commuter with his belt inside a Western Railway local train, prompting the Government Railway Police (GRP) to launch a search operation.

The incident reportedly took place in a second-class general compartment of a Western Railway suburban train. A video of the altercation has since gone viral on social media.

According to police, the argument began after the man objected to the woman sleeping on a train seat despite there being adequate seating space in the compartment. The commuter allegedly hurled abuses at the woman before walking away.

However, when the woman objected to his behaviour and asked him not to raise his voice, the man returned, removed his trouser belt and allegedly attempted to intimidate her while continuing to use abusive language.

Although several passengers witnessed the incident, no one was seen intervening. One of the commuters recorded the episode on a mobile phone, and the footage later surfaced on social media.

The Andheri GRP said it is in the process of registering an FIR and has identified the accused using the viral video and CCTV footage from railway stations.

Police said they are analysing CCTV footage to trace the suspect's movements and expressed confidence that he would be arrested soon.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over passenger safety on Mumbai's suburban railway network, which has witnessed several violent incidents in recent months.
