Bantwal, Aug 7: The death toll in the tipper truck-scooter collision at N G Circle in B C Road has risen to two, with the critically injured scooter rider Dayananda succumbing to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
The accident had occurred around 6.30 pm on Thursday, August 6, when Dayananda and pillion rider Yashwanth Kulal were travelling from Mangaluru towards Dharmasthala on their scooter (KA-70-H-5059).
A tipper truck (KA-19-AF-8073), driven by 33-year-old Salman Farooq, a resident of Pallamajalu in Bantwal, was proceeding from Kalladka towards Loretto. According to police, the truck was allegedly being driven recklessly and at high speed when it rammed into the scooter at N G Circle.
Both victims sustained grievous injuries and were rushed to the District Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru. Yashwanth Kulal was declared dead shortly after admission, while Dayananda, who had been undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU), succumbed to his injuries later in the night.
The Bantwal Traffic police had registered a case against the truck driver under Sections 281, 125(a), and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in Crime No. 99/2026.
The accused driver has been taken into custody, and further investigation is in progress.
