Sanaa, Aug 7: Two civilians were killed and 14 others injured after Houthi shelling struck residential neighbourhoods and camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Yemen's Marib city on Friday, the country's Ministry of Public Health and Population said.

In a statement, the ministry condemned what it described as the shelling of civilian areas, saying the preliminary toll stood at two deaths and 14 injured with varying degrees of injuries.

The ministry said it had instructed all hospitals and health facilities to remain on high alert, mobilise available resources and make every effort to provide treatment to the injured.

It described the attack on residential areas and displacement camps as a violation of international humanitarian law and called on the international community and humanitarian organisations to take urgent steps to protect civilians and prevent further attacks.

Meanwhile, missile and drone strikes also targeted government military positions in Marib province on Friday, according to a Yemeni military source and local residents.

The attacks came a day after Houthi strikes reportedly killed dozens of government troops in Marib and neighbouring Hadramout.

A Yemeni military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Houthi forces targeted several government military camps, including the headquarters of the Third Military Region in Marib city.

Residents reported hearing multiple explosions across the city during the attacks, while local media said several military positions in and around Marib were struck by missiles and drones.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree had said on Thursday that ballistic missiles and drones targeted military camps and troop concentrations belonging to Saudi-backed government forces in Marib and Hadramout.

Saree claimed that "hundreds" of government fighters had been killed or injured in the attacks. The claim could not be independently verified.
