Nashik, Aug 9: A mild earthquake followed by a tremor struck Maharashtra's Nashik district, causing cracks in houses in some areas and triggering panic among residents, officials said on Sunday.

No loss of life was reported.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake of 4.3 magnitude struck Nashik at 10 pm on Saturday, followed by a 3.3-magnitude tremor at 5.33 am on Sunday.

The seismic activity was recorded at a depth of 5 km in the Bhanwad area, close to the Hatgad mountain range near the Maharashtra-Gujarat border, officials said.

Tremors were felt in parts of Nashik city as well as Surgana, Kalwan, Deola, Chandwad, Peth, Dindori and Niphad talukas, prompting residents to rush out of their homes.

Cracks developed in the walls of houses at Bhadar in Surgana taluka and Nanashi in Dindori taluka, according to district administration officials.

No casualties were reported. Officials also inspected dams in the affected area and found no damage.

"People should not fear. They should not believe any rumours. However, everyone should remain alert and take safety precautions," district Collector Ayush Prasad said.

Tremors had earlier been recorded in the district between July 25 and 28 and again on August 6.
